Electrical Contractors Bending Conduit

The Problem To Be Solved:

Commercial and industrial electricians/ contractors install wiring systems in building structures of all types, for the purpose of providing power for lighting and the extensive number of electronics and equipment that are vital in today's complex environment.

To protect the electrical wiring from physical damage, moisture, electromagnetic interference, fire, etc., the electrical wiring is often inserted and run through electrical conduits or pipes. The most common types are E.M.T (Electrical Metallic Tubing) or rigid conduit". Electrical codes require the use of conduit in a variety of circumstances.

Installing a conduit system requires making various bends to suit the particulars of the sight. However, bending the conduit, even by competent professionals, often requires a repeated series of pipe bending actions, checking the level, measuring the angle, and tweaking the pipe until it's just right, this is time consuming as well as costly due to improperly bent conduits which often times are reduced to waste.

Bend AssistTM

The Bend AssistTM is a new bending aid that steamlines the conduit bending process into an efficient and precise process by enabling users to bend the conduit to an exact predetermined angle in one movement or action, first time everytime.

The Bend AssistTM includes all of the features and benefits of the traditional level type bending tool, yet has bending angle detection and indication. While looking like and sharing many features of the common level, such as ninety degree vertical and horizontal vials, forty-five degree vials, and thirty degree vials, it will do much more.

The Bend AssistTM incorporates audio and visual indicators which are selected at the users' discretion. It has a device capable of reading and displaying the angle at which it is positioned. There is also a means for selecting any angle between zero and ninety degrees. It has a zero degree reset button, to assure that should a bend start on a plane other than zero, the proper preselected angle will be achieved before indicating such.

To use, the operator decides the required bend and selects angle by pushing plus / minus buttons on front of the tool until the number is displayed in the angle selected window. Before bending, the user presses the zero reset button unless he's sure the bending surface is suitably level. The user can now commence bending as usual.

The indicators will activate when within 10 degrees, slowly at first and steadily and progressively more rapid until steady tone and or light indicates true degree bend.

Should the user bend past the required degree, the indicators will subsequently return to a rapid intermittent indication. This method assures simplicity along with accuracy in a timely manner, as there is no need to stop the bend to visually check the level.

These features can be readily applied to a level of any length. Including the plumbers' version that will indicate proper pitch as specified for drainage.

The Bend AssistTM is also set up to assist with the common offset bends which are often troublesome for many tradesmen. An offset bend is a bend that elevates or lowers a pipe runs plane to accommodate for obstacles. For example were you to be running horizontally along a wall and suddenly there is a piece of heating duct in your path and you determine that you need to elevate ten inches to safely clear it, then you are looking to make a ten inch offset.

The Bend AssistTM features a built in offset calculator. Simply enter "offset in inches" and "angle being used" and "distance between bends" will appear in display. You may also choose to enter "offset in inches" and "distance between bends" and "angle required" will appear in display. Simply make your marks on conduit, enter angle into Bend AssistTM and achieve perfect offsets quickly, accurately every time.

Doglegs occur when bend number two is not on same plane as bend number one. While some electricians can perform this easily, others need to tweak doglegs many times before getting it right. To eliminate doglegs, the Bend AssistTM incorporates anti dogleg feature.

Bend AssistTM Features and Benefits:
