"Every state requires that kids up to 4 years of age ride in a car seat." (Source: Consumer Reports) In most states, once a child reaches a certain weight and age, such as over 20 pounds and one year old, a car seat is used with the child facing the front of the vehicle, what is called a "front facing" car seat.

However, with typical car seats, it can be very difficult to move the child into or out of the car seat due to the confined space in most passenger vehicles. Because the adult is standing outside the vehicle when lifting the child, this causes the adult to bend, twist, and lean or reach into the vehicle while carrying a child with a substantial amount of weight.

Additionally, many car seats include partially raised sides which require an adult to lift the child over and above the side of the seat. Many car seats also have a five-point seatbelt harness where the adult has to lean into the vehicle to assist the child in putting the five-point harness on and buckling it. When the child exits the vehicle, it is again necessary for the adult to perform the process in reverse.

This procedure is repeated frequently for children aged one to four years old, weighing between 20 to 40 pounds. Manufacturers statistics indicate that adults place children in and out of car seats approximately 7,664 times over this three year period, lifting approx. 92 tons (184,000 pounds) over that timeframe.

Thus, adults can inadvertently sustain or seed future neck, back, shoulder, hip or other pains or injuries, or worsen existing problems. This would especially be the case for older parents or grandparents who may have physical disabilities or physical conditions.
